Presentation of the bus PC Card

The bus PCMCIA PC Card was perfected in 1989 by the consortium PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, from which the given name sometimes to the bus) in order to spread the capacities of welcome of peripherals of the laptops.

Technical characteristic

The peripheral PCMCIA are at the format card of credit (54 mm by 85 mm) and possess a connector of 68 pegs.

It exists three types of factor of form (form factor) corresponding to three standard thicknesses:

The cards of type I generally are used for cards of extension of memory.  The cards of type II habitually serve for peripherals of communication (modem, card network, card network without wire) and of small hard discs.  At last the cards of type III, a lot thicker ones, are usually reserved to peripherals embarking mechanical elements (hard discs of big capacity).

From 1995 the normal CardBus (sometimes called PC Card 32-bit) appeared, allowing the transfers of data in 32 bits, rhythmical to a frequency of 33 MHz with a tension of 3V (against 5,5 for the PCMCIA).
